City author’s Southland book makes it on to bestseller list for sales over 7000 IInvercargill author Helen Campbell’s book What is a Southlander? has made it on to Booksellers New Zealand’s latest bestsellers list. The book has been ranked as a bronze premier children’s best seller for achieving sales of more than 7000. What is a Southlander? was written in 1999 as a project for the Southland Reading Association and published by Invercargill’s Craigs Design and Print in 2000. Mrs Campbell said it was written for and tested on 6 to 11-year-olds who struggled with reading. “If it appealed to them then it would appeal to all ages. It didn’t read just as a kids’ book - adults can get enjoyment out of it too,” she said. Mrs Campbell said a lot of copies were bought as gifts for people overseas to remind them of home. As well as an author, Mrs Campbell is a literacy resource teacher and works closely with children who need support with reading and writing. She is in the early stages of writing a new children’s book with Invercargill AMyor Tim Shadbolt. The book is titled Oliver Meets the Mayor. |

Pride of place in gold - 25 May 2005 - By EILEEN GOODWIN The book set to become a big-budget film and West End musical has won its Invercargill printer a top industry award.
Craigs general manager Neil Jackson said it was the first time a Southland firm had won a gold medal. Only a handful of the thousands of entries to the Pride In Print Awards were awarded the top prize. The judges did not award medals automatically in each category but only when they considered the standard high enough, Mr Jackson said. Pride In Print was considered the premium award in the New Zealand printing business. "It's the cream of the cream." But he was keen to give his staff the credit. "It's a tribute to their experience and skill." The 129-year-old company employed more than 50 staff. Craigs Print was one of the oldest printing companies in New Zealand and had clients throughout New Zealand and Australia, he said. Production manager Bill McLachlan said books were a relatively small part of the business, with the company producing about a dozen a year. The Lonely Dog was printed in January in a limited print run of 300 copies. A London musical director confirmed this month the story would be developed into a stage musical. Oscar-winning director Peter Jackson is also in talks with Clarke over making a movie out of his book. Clarke said he was delighted Craigs had won the award with his book. The standard of artistry and technical workmanship was high in The Lonely Dog, which had contributed to its success, he said. The book retailed for $285 but sold out quickly.
